Nothing was planned. Neither the phenomenal success of Squid Game nor a season 2 for the Korean series. And yet, that’s what its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, announced: there will be a sequel to games even nastier than hand games …
Could it be otherwise? With over 111 million views in just 17 days, making the best startup ever on Netflix, Squid Game has become a true pop culture phenomenon, with the show’s outfits even becoming even more ubiquitous costumes. then those of La Casa de Papel for Halloween in 2021. And yet, the creator of the Korean show, Hwang Dong-hyuk, took more than 10 years to be able to produce his series, written in reaction to various economic crises. Nobody really believed it, and neither did Netflix: in its traditional monthly agenda of new programs to find, the platform had absolutely no mention of it in September …
It is by word of mouth, which we should now call the keyboard-to-screen since it is done on social networks, that Squid Game has established itself as a phenomenon. Its principle, inspired by the famous Japanese film Battle Royale(itself born out of a novel), like so many dystopian works, is based on the will to get by for poor people. They are 456 to have registered, to participate in children’s games, turned into deadly games, and with the prospect for the last survivor to win 45.6 million won (about 32 million euros). Sadistic, social and breathless, the program immediately found its audience, in particular thanks to the mysterious atmosphere reigning there. We won’t go into the plot here, to avoid spoilers if you haven’t watched the show everyone’s talking about yet, but after the 9 episodes of Season 1, there are still a lot of questions Squid Game must always answer …
LOTS OF PRESSURE FOR SQUID GAME SEASON 2
But all of these questions almost went unanswered. Because the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has long repeated that not only the series had exhausted him, but that season 2 was absolutely not planned. Under pressure from fans, and probably a bit from Netflix as well, he eventually gave in, and confirmed during an interview that Squid Game would be back soon for the sequel:
“THERE HAS BEEN SO MUCH PRESSURE, DEMANDS, AND PASSION FOR THIS SEASON 2, IT’S LIKE I HAVEN’T REALLY HAD A CHOICE. BUT I CAN CONFIRM THAT THERE WILL BE A SECOND SEASON. IMAGINING IT AND THINKING ABOUT ITS STRUCTURE. IT’S FAR TOO EARLY TO TELL YOU WHEN AND HOW THIS SEASON 2 WILL SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY. “

We, therefore, understand that we may have forced his hand a little, but that he will get back to work, this time accompanied by other directors and screenwriters, whom he will supervise. The writing work has not yet started, however, it will be necessary to be patient to discover the continuation of the Squid Game phenomenon. Until then, you’ll have plenty of time to update yourself by watching Season 1 on Netflix.
